67 Special Projects 7 Southeast Asia Regional Standards for Science Teachers (SEARS-ST) and Malaysian Science Teachers’ Quality Standards (MSTQS) In 2014, SEAMEO RECSAM coordinated the development of “Southeast Asia Regional Standards for Science Teachers” (SEARS-ST) to improve the quality of teachers as well as to regulate and maintain the quality of science/ mathematics education in a fast growing institution like SEAMEO. Two series of meetings and workshops were held on 20 to 22 January 2014 and 16 to 18 June 2014 respectively for the said purpose involving the specialists from theMinistries of Education of SEAMEO, SEAMEO QITEP in Science and RECSAM as well as the consultants from New Zealand and United Kingdom. The SEARS-ST document includes four dimensions consisting of a number of components that are further sub-divided into elements. These four dimensions include (i) professional knowledge; (ii) professional practice; (iii) professional attributes andethics; and (iv) professional development.
