SAW programme helped to promote a better international understanding of key international issues among young people and their teachers by encouraging their students to investigate common science-based themes and exchange results, ideas and perspectives with their counterparts globally. It brought a global dimension to education by raising awareness of different perspectives, way of life and national traditions of students in many contrasting societies. Besides, it raises awareness of the common and contrasting ways science and technology affect society, industry and the environment. It also provided a platform for schools in different countries to collaborate on a range of exciting and important projects. There were more than 500 schools and 100 teachers in more than 14 Asia-Paci fi c countries participating. RECSAM had been a coordinator of SAW since 1991 for the Asia Paci fi c Region. Science Across Asia Paci fi c (SAAP) was initiated in consultation with ASE and funded by BP Malaysia, the company currently named as Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn. Bhd. Prior to the appointment of Ms. Ng Khar Thoe from 1999, Dr. Purisima R. Remorin and Ms. Hajira Bee Abdul Rahman were the regional representatives.
