43 Milestones 3 • The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) was fi rst conducted, a special programme jointly hosted by SEAMEO RELC with four batches • The SAW programme was managed by the ASE in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) March 2000 • The Surau An-Nur (place of worship) was declared open April and September 2000 • First phase of workshops on Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Science (ATLAS), a project mooted in 1999 by Shef fi eld Hallam University, U.K. in collaboration with Shell International, British Council and the Ministry of Education, Malaysia May 2000 • The Teacher’s Council of Thailand (KHURUSAPHA) forged a cordial partnership with RECSAM for staff development programmes in Bangkok July 2000 • Seventh Five-Year Plan (July 2000 to June 2005) • Workshop 2 for editing of Malaysian Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) book to document winning entries of best practices • Two customised courses for the RECSAM-IKIP, Semarang (Indonesia) and RECSAM-Montfort Teachers’ College (Thailand) were hosted with the sponsorship of the Asian Development Bank • The Centre also conducted two training courses for Malaysian teachers, funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Malaysia and World Bank ESSP Loan July 2001 • Intel Teach to the Future (ITTF) Master Facilitator’s course with workshops on training of 106 teachers thereafter organised by Intel Education at RECSAM • Second phase of workshops on Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Science (ATLAS), a project of Shef fi eld Hallam University, U.K. in collaboration with Shell International, British Council and the Ministry of Education, Malaysia March 2002 • The third ‘Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists’ (SSYS) was held with the theme “Creating Intelligent Cities for the Harmonious Societies of the New Millennium”. Three local computer scientist, engineer and pharmacist were invited in science forum to share experience, motivate and model science related careers 2000 2001 2002 April 2003 • The fi rst “World Conference on Science and Technology Education” was held in collaboration with ICASE. RECSAM was also conferred the Special Distinguished Service Award by ICASE September 2003 • The signing of Memorandum of Agreement with Académie des Sciences, France marked the beginning of RECSAM’s collaboration with La main à la pâte 2003
