70 Participants of SEARS-MT workshop held in 2013 The SEARS-MT served as an inspirational guide to conceptualise the Malaysian Mathematics Teacher Quality Standards (MMTQS). The MMTQS is an expansion of SEARS-MT with the inclusion of local descriptors to re fl ect unique context of Malaysia. The objectives of developing the MMTQS include: (i) as a guide to provide benchmarks for relevant Malaysian educational divisions formulating policies to improve and enhance the quality of in-service mathematics teachers, (ii) as a guide in structuring teacher education programmes in in-service mathematics teacher preparation and (iii) as a guide for teacher professional development at personal level and performance evaluation at school level. This was realised in a workshop held on 12 & 13 June 2014 at SEAMEO RECSAM and participated by 25 educators from foreign and local universities, institutes of teacher education, as well as researchers, school senior teachers and of fi cers from the Ministry of Education Malaysia. Finally, the document was handed over to the Teacher Education Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia in March 2015.
