19 Looking Back 2 The Nineties The nineteen-nineties saw the implementation phases of the Fifth (July 1990 to June 1995) and Sixth Five-Year Plan (July 1995 to June 2000) of RECSAM. All throughout this decade, RECSAM had accomplished a number of its programmes and activities in its effort to meet the needs of the SEAMEO Member Countries, particularly in the area of improving the teaching of science and mathematics. Highlights and accomplishments during the decade were as follows: In the 1990s, the Centre hosted colloquia, covering a wide range of topics in relation to science and mathematics education. These served as an effective medium for sharing of experiences and dissemination of fi ndings gathered from various studies and researches by visiting consultants, as well as RECSAM’s professional staff. The SEAMEO-UNESCO Regional Workshop on "Environmental Education for Secondary Teacher Education" was aimed at assisting SEAMEO Member Countries to develop effective strategies and guidelines to incorporate Environmental Education (EE). This project was jointly organised by the SEAMEO Secretariat and RECSAM, in collaborationwithUNESCOBangkok from 6 to 9 December 1993. It was of fi ciated by Y.B. Dato’ Dr. Hilmi bin Haji Yahaya, Penang State Executive Councilor, who also delivered a keynote speech entitled, "TheConcept of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Living." TheCanadian International Development Agency (CIDA) sponsored a four- day conference in September 1993. This conference was a regional event on "Women in Development Initiatives in Southeast Asia" and participated by all SEAMEO Member Countries’
